Travel Counsellor Charlotte Daines provides some great professional advice if you are planning an exotic getaway!

In our latest blog I chat to Charlotte Daines, Travel Counsellor who arranged my fantastic trip to Vietnam earlier this year.   Here she shares her career journey from being a dog walker/trainer to independent travel advisor, plus some great advice for those of you planning an exotic getaway this year.

When did you start Travel Counsellor and why?

I started my journey with Travel Counsellors in November 2023 after running my own dog walking and training business. Yes, it’s quite a change, but before that, I worked in the travel industry, so it wasn’t completely alien to me. Travel has always been a huge passion of mine, and I guess the pull to eventually return to the industry was just too strong to resist! Being able to combine my love for travel with creating tailored, unforgettable experiences for clients has been so rewarding, and I’m excited to see where this new chapter takes me.

Why choose an independent travel advisor?

Well, after running my own business for 12 years, I’m used to doing things my way—and I love the freedom that comes with it. I wanted to get back into the travel industry but on my terms. Flexibility is key for me, especially with my 4-year-old daughter—I want to be there for her while still doing something I’m passionate about. It’s not just about booking holidays; it’s about building relationships and giving my clients peace of mind knowing they have someone they can trust every step of the way. Being independent means, I can focus entirely on my clients, offering the kind of personal service that’s hard to come by these days. Plus, let’s face it, travel can be overwhelming with so many choices out there.

I met your husband when we were both training at the Victoria Stillwell Academy and he recommended you to me.  What was your first impression of my needs and how did you tailor my holiday?

When we first spoke about your holiday, I was genuinely excited—your trip requests were right up my alley! I love talking about and planning trips to Southeast Asia, so I knew straight away this would be a joy to work on.

What stood out to me, though, was that it wasn’t the distance from home that worried you, but your confidence in taking this journey. I completely understood how important it was for you to feel comfortable and in control, so I tailored everything with that in mind. I offered a selection of carefully chosen options, explaining each one in detail so you knew exactly what to expect and could make the right choice for you.

I also wanted to make sure you felt supported every step of the way. I reassured you that I would handle everything—checking you in when needed, ensuring all your documents were uploaded to the app, and being available whenever you needed me, before, during, and even after the trip. My aim was for you to feel confident and excited, knowing everything was completely taken care of, so all you had to do was look forward to enjoying your adventure!

Since Covid, it has been a little harder to travel.  What has changed in the travel industry since then?

Since Covid, the travel experience has shifted in a lot of ways—but not all of them are bad! Health and safety have become top priorities, with enhanced cleaning measures and touchless check-ins now standard. Flexibility has also improved; it’s so much easier to adjust bookings, which has been a game-changer.

Travel rules, like vaccine passports and Covid tests, have added some extra planning steps, but with a bit of preparation (and a good travel advisor!), they’re manageable. People are also leaning toward quieter, sustainable destinations, and the rise in remote getaways is a trend I love.

Finally, travel insurance has become essential, and tech upgrades like mobile passes are making things smoother overall. Travel is different now, but with these changes, it’s still just as rewarding to explore the world!

I run my own house and pet-sitting service which makes it easier for me to organise for my dog and cats to be looked after whilst I am away.  Do you provide any advice to clients on how they arrange looking after their furry family for the holiday period?

Absolutely! As someone who used to run my own dog walking and training business, I understand how important it is to have peace of mind about your pets while you’re away. For clients planning their holidays, I always recommend arranging pet care as early as possible, especially during busy travel seasons. Whether it’s a trusted house sitter, a professional boarding service, or even a family member, having a plan in place ensures your furry friends are well looked after.

I also encourage clients to meet with their chosen sitter or caregiver beforehand to go over routines, dietary needs, and any quirks their pets might have. Leaving a detailed care plan with emergency contacts, vet information, and even a favourite toy or blanket can help make the transition smoother for your pet.

If clients ever need advice on finding reliable pet care, I’m more than happy to help with tips or recommendations—I know firsthand how much of a difference good preparation can make!

Since the UK came out of the EU can you give travellers any advice on the documents they now need and any tips on insurance?

Since the UK left the EU, there are a few extra steps travellers need to keep in mind when planning a trip to Europe. First, check your passport—it needs to be less than 10 years old and have at least 6 months left on it. For most EU countries, you can stay visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180 days but longer stays may require a visa.

If you have an EHIC card, it’s still valid until it expires, after which you’ll need a GHIC. While these provide access to basic state healthcare, travel insurance is still essential to cover emergencies, repatriation, and cancellations. Make sure your policy covers any pre-existing conditions and disruptions like COVID-related issues.

If you’re driving, check whether you need an International Driving Permit or a Green Card for your car insurance. And don’t forget to double-check your phone plan—some providers now charge for roaming in the EU. Planning is key, and I’m here to help with any questions or updates for your destination!

People can travel anywhere in the world which is exciting.  Can you share with my UK readers the most popular destinations to visit in 2025?

There are so many exciting destinations to visit in 2025! If you’re craving the hustle and bustle of a major city, New York is always a great choice with its vibrant arts scene, iconic landmarks, and endless things to do. For those looking for a bit of culture mixed with adventure, Bangkok in Thailand is a must-see with its stunning temples, lively street markets, and delicious food. If you prefer relaxing on beautiful beaches, Phuket offers the perfect combination of sun, sea, and a rich cultural experience.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to go somewhere a little less conventional, why not consider Tirana in Albania? This up-and-coming destination is known for its colourful architecture, vibrant arts scene, and fascinating history—plus, it’s incredibly budget-friendly! And if you’re a fan of winter sports, Sapporo in Japan is the place to be. Famous for its snow festival, it offers great skiing and snowboarding opportunities, along with mouthwatering food and beautiful landscapes.

These are just a few ideas, but no matter where you choose, 2025 is shaping up to be an amazing year for travel!

Can you share any travel tips?

When it comes to packing, keep it simple! Pack versatile clothes that can be layered depending on the weather and activities. Don’t forget a power bank, your chargers, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.

For money, I recommend carrying a mix of cash, a travel card, and a credit card. A prepaid travel card (like Revolut or Wise) can save you on foreign exchange fees but always have some local cash for small purchases.

Vaccination-wise, make sure to check what’s required for your destination ahead of time. And if you take any regular medications, keep them in their original packaging and pack them in your hand luggage.

Travel insurance is a must—especially if you’re doing adventurous activities. It’s worth ensuring that your coverage includes things like cancellations, medical emergencies, and lost luggage.

Lastly, keep a copy of important documents, like your passport and travel insurance, stored separately. Taking photos or emailing them to yourself is a great backup in case something goes missing.

With these tips, you’ll be all set for a smooth and stress-free trip!

What are your favourite places to visit and how many countries have you experienced yourself?

I love visiting European cities—they’re so easy to get to, and each one has its unique charm. From the incredible history and architecture to the delicious food and vibrant culture, they never disappoint! So far, I’ve been lucky enough to visit 27 countries around the world, and my bucket list is still growing. There’s just something magical about discovering new places and experiences, and I don’t think I’ll ever stop exploring!

Finally, what is your own perfect holiday? And is there anything you always take with you?

I don’t think I have a “perfect” holiday—it depends on who I’m traveling with and how much time I have. Since having my daughter, my travel style has changed a lot, and I now lean toward family-friendly vacations that keep her entertained and happy. However, on those rare occasions when it’s just me and my husband or a trip with the girls, I love choosing something completely different each time, whether it’s a cultural escape, a relaxing retreat, or an adventure-packed getaway. One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is my love for exploring new places—I always make a point of traveling somewhere I haven’t been before with each trip!
